Summary:

Youth Truck is a mobile outreach service, which sensitizes youth in rural areas and urban slums on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) (including HIV/AIDS prevention) through films and other activities.

Program goals/rationale:

The project aims at positive behaviour change among young people through a variety of activities such as establishing and strengthening youth clubs or peer groups, providing information, education, and services on/for sexual and reproductive health.

Key program components:

Youth Truck offers disadvantaged young people, especially in rural and urban slum areas, access to information and non–formal education. It combines a mobile approach with highly participatory and youth friendly methods like film shows, games and sports activities, as well as group work, role plays and discussions in which themes like adolescent sexual reproductive health and rights information and education, entrepreneurship skills training, life skills education and non-violent conflict resolution are offered. This is carried out by a team of well trainned youth who communicate in the many Ugandan dialects.

Clubs are established after the mobile clinic runs community sensitisation interventions. Through these clubs, young people have more access to quality reproductive health information and services.

Program history:

The Youth Truck was established by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, with German support, as a mobile children and youth service. DSW has operated the Youth Truck on behalf of the ministry since July 2006.
