Summary:

The Unique Identification Mobile Verification Program, run by PharmaSecure, lets customers use text messages to verify that their drugs are not counterfeit.

Program goals/rationale:

PharmaSecure's mission is to make the best anti-counterfeiting technologies available in at-risk markets with seamless and affordable factory integration for pharmaceutical manufacturers. Their product security solution empowers consumers to check for themselves that their drugs are genuine, by connecting them directly with manufacturers. This is important because as many as 1 million people die every year from taking faulty medicines (including both fakes and those that are degraded or substandard). Some estimates put counterfeits at more than 10% of the global medicine market.

Key program components:

PharmaSecure’s Unique Identification Mobile Verification (UIMV) system works as follows: PharmaSecure generates codes randomly via a secure proprietary program (they are able to produce up to 10-to-the-37th-power codes) and they then use tamper-proof inks to apply it to the pill packaging. Even for external application labels, they use destructible paper with the highest quality inks, such that the cost of counterfeiting the coding itself becomes prohibitive. Once customers buy the medicine, they can then text message the code to a phone number linked to a database. Computers look up the code, cross it off, and send back the expiration date and batch number to the customer. If multiple customers send in the same code, the system warns them instantly. It also alerts manufacturers that fakes are afoot and helps pinpoint where. The PS system is currently capable of handling 50 authentication requests per second. This equates to more than four million requests per day. System load is constantly monitored and additional capacity will be added when required. This system is the most cost-effective approach as opposed to holograms, scratch-and-reveal, and other security methods.

Additionally, after UIMV codes are in place on a pharmaceutical brand, PharmaSecure can facilitate communication directly with consumers based on real-time market intelligence. They can remind consumers to take their medicine, renew a prescription, or follow up with consumers on health outcomes. Each communication plan is customized for the individual pharmaceutical company depending on their communication needs, regulatory constraints, and budget.

Program history:

PharmaSecure launched the pilot of its system nationwide with a high quality manufacturer in early 2010. With successful manufacturer integration, the company is now pursuing partnerships across the pharmaceutical industry.
