There are approximately 12,728,000 people living in Guatemala. While there is limited data available on blindness, estimates suggest that there are over 80,000 peopele who are currently blind from cataracts and thousands more children, women and men go blind every year. This blindness could be cured by a simple surgery.
Key program components
It works to educate the public about eye care while also providing quality eye care services to the poor, focusing on preventable blindness, cataracts and ametropia. It performs about 30% of all the cataract surgeries in the country with only 2% of the nation’s ophthalmologists, and is the only institution providing eye care screening of children aged 5-15.
