The Mobile Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory was launched in 2005 by the Vivus Group to help treat heart-disease in rural and peri-urban areas.

Key program components:

Vivus Group works to extend the reach of technology to the doorstep of the people. To help achieve this goal, the Group launched the Mobile Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory in 2005. The mobile cath lab is a sophisticated cardiac cath lab on wheels. The equipment is housed in a 40 feet trailer, which is bacteria free and air conditioned. The trailer can be taken to any part of the state, on regular roads. The cardiac catheterization is done inside the trailer and recovery of patient occurs in any hospital or nursing home with modest facilities.

While it takes Rs. 40 million to set up a regular cath-lab, a mobile unit can be set up at one-fourth of that price. Furthermore, the mobile service costs only Rs. 5000, almost half of what a comparable procedure would cost at an urban cath-lab.

The mobile lab has many advantages. First, it avoids the inconvenience of patients traveling to big cities to avail the facilities. The procedure can be done in familiar surroundings with close family and friends available to the patient. This can also allow the family doctor to be present during the procedure to take immediate decision and help comfort the patient. Second, not all patients who have heart problems require bypass surgery or angioplasty. The angiogram can clearly tell the severity and extent of the heart problem. Patients with milder disease can be managed medically at their home town. Only patients with severe disease need to come to a city for advanced treatment like angioplasty or bypass surgery. This kind of screening further simplifies and reduces the cost of health care.
