Summary:

The Zain Corporate HIV/AIDS Program is implemented, in partnership with PharmAccess, to provide Zain employees and their dependents with comprehensive HIV/AIDS counseling and care.

Program goals/rationale:

The HIV/AIDS epidemic confronted Zain with an unquantifiable risk to their operational management. The company recognized the urgency to act and formulated a corporate HIV/AIDS policy based on four core principles including management commitment, non discrimination, fair employment and confidentiality. The program aims to "keep HIV negative employees and dependants negative and HIV positive employees and dependants healthy and productive."

Key program components:

The program firstly provides hand tailor-made HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness programs in the local operations, including Voluntary Counselling and Testing. Secondly, it provides all employees and their dependants access to free confidential and high quality care and treatment through the company-wide Health Insurance.

The implementation of the program follows a structured approach and includes:

1. Assessment
Review of medical infrastructure, company culture and government response, resulting in country specific cost estimations and project plans.

2. Implementation
Training of medical staff, contracting clinics for provision of treatment, contracting third party administrators for confidential administration of medical costs, a comprehensive risk assessment including HIV/AIDS prevalence testing, a Knowledge, Attitudes, Practise and Behaviour survey (KAPB), Focus Group Discussions, assessment and selection of local prevention partners and the starting of local prevention and awareness programs.

3. Continued program management support
Support includes the implementation of financial and medical audits to guarantee continuous provision of quality and confidential HIV/AIDS treatment and annual program management workshops.

Program history:

In Uganda the program has been awarded 'the Fight Against HIV/AIDS Award' by the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE).
