Summary
The Access to Healthcare for Underprivileged Program (AHUP) offers vulnerable groups, such as the homeless and elderly, a chance to meet a doctor whilst also giving medical students an opportunity to have a first-hand experience on primary care practice.Program goals
The aim of AHUP is to provide free medical consultation and enlighten medical students of the unidentified healthcare problems in their community.
Key program components
AHUP seeks to improve both the wellbeing of the underprivileged and the social awareness of the medical students in Rwanda. The students visit the patients themselves and apply the knowledge from their hospital experiences to promote the health needs of their community. In addition they will provide extra services to clients, for instance HIV/AIDS sufferers, who need specialised medical care. Patients, if they so wish, will also be given further advice from the students even after they have received consultation from their local hospital. The project embraces the holistic approach of team work, bringing together medical , pharmaceutical and clinical psychology students. The projects hopes to expand itself to include social workers as well as medical students who will all work together under the supervision of an appointed medical doctor.
