Summary
The AMS initiative provides training and accreditation to drug dispensaries in Liberia to ensure that patients can access appropriate medicines in proper dosages.Program goals
Liberia offers a unique opportunity for building a sustainable drug seller initiative in an emerging state context. Conceptualizing and launching an accredited drug seller initiative will lead to improved access to essential medicines and basic health care referrals and services in the more remote areas of the country and increase pharmaceutical services for much of the population in more populated areas.
Key program components
The initiative launched in Montserrado County as it has nearly 80% of all medicines stores in Liberia and about 32% of the country's population. The AMS initiative aims to increase the quality of pharmaceutical services in more populated urban areas and lead to improved access to essential medicines and basic pharmaceutical services and health care referrals in the more remote areas of the country. Dispensaries will receive training, accreditation and branding from the AMS initiative. Furthermore, customers will receive training by the dispensers on how to use the drugs properly, in order to make sure the medicine is used in the most effective way. As of March 2013, 120 proprietors and 358 dispensers had been trained and accredited. This initiative is modeled on the [Accredited Drug Dispensing Outlets (ADDO)](http://healthmarketinnovations.org/program/accredited-drug-dispensing-outlets-addo) being implemented by MSH in Tanzania.
