Adolescent Friendly Reproductive Health Services Program (AFRHS) is a program that focuses on the welfare of adolescents through guidance on how to maximize the use of health care services.Program goals
This program aims to build the capacity of health service providers in providing adolescent friendly reproductive health services and through the promotion and instillation of healthy behaviors among adolescents. It also seeks to advocate and institutionalize policies, ordinances, and resolutions that promote adolescent welfare and reproductive health rights. It also intends to establish and organize co-management of adolescent defined quality services with local government units and multisectoral partners.
Key program components
AFRHS facilities initially provided the following services: Family Planning and Supplies Provision, Prenatal Care, Postnatal Care, Dental Care, and Medical Care. The AFRHS facility now provides comprehensive health services for adolescents and adopts the 7 standards of adolescent friendliness: 1. Multisectoral Partnership in Quality Service 2. Adolescent and Youth Involvement and Participation 3. Respect Diversity and Acceptance 4. Adolescent Friendly Health Service Providers 5. Accessible and Suitable Health Facilities 6. Three-Way Referral System 7. Adolescent Gender and Culture Sensitive Information, Education and Communication Materials Adolescent groups such as BALUTI (Batang Laging Umiiwas sa Tiyak na Impeksyon), KAPWA (Kabataan para sa Wastong Aksyon) and Sigaw ng Batingaw, etc. are important assets and resources that contribute to adolescent health and development and that of the community, through peer counseling and support; particularly targeting adolescents in the community which attend schools with known at risk behaviors. These civic organizations are involved in program planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. They utilizes innovative interventions such as the” Give Me 5” approach, positive deviant inquiry or reality mapping, film showing, community-led service activities, home visits and counseling to address the different problems of adolescents. Initially, the program was piloted in 2 barangays in Paranaque ( San Dionisio and BF Homes) but at present, it has expanded to 16 barangays and 6 schools ( Baclaran PNHS, Baclaran High School Annex, Don Galo, La Huerta, ALS and PNHS) in Parañaque City and and other cities such as Las Pinas, Taguig, Pasay and Caloocan.
