Summary
AyurVAID Hospitals are a chain of hospitals, dedicated to applying classical Ayurveda (India’s traditional system of medicine) in combination with modern medicine to solve health problems, in with a particular focus on chronic illnesses.Key program components
AyurVAID believes that the ultimate model of corporate social responsibility is to build an inclusive but commercial business model: low-income consumers are genuine customers with the dignity to choose and participate in the health care of their choice. Critically, AyurVAID can also run on a sustainable and scalable basis so as to impact the maximum number of people. To that end, AyurVAID has developed the AyurSEVA brand, which is a community initiative of AyurVAID Hospitals.
AyurSEVA offers AyurVAID services at affordable rates to low-income communities typically earning between US$ 125 - 175 per month. With identical medical standards, AyurSEVA units are able to bring down the cost of treatment by offering a general ward format and employing a lower cost of establishment and operations.
The result is an in-patient service for chronic disease at the rate of Rs 750/- (US$ 19) per day, even in cities like Mumbai. By taking this approach, AyurVAID is increasing access to healthcare for the poor in a sustainable and scalable manner, while simultaneously expanding AyurVAID's market presence and building a long-term customer base for the company.
AyurVAID is now operating six small to medium sized hospitals in three neighboring states: two hospitals in Kerala, three in Karnataka and one in Maharastra. The hospitals are located in urban areas including Mumbai.
By using low-cost and cross-subsidy models, as well as partnerships with leading insurance players, AyurVAID is bringing affordable services to low-income communities, increasing both the quality and the accessibility of treatment available.
As of February 2011, the project had plans to expand its bed strength from the present 120 to 1,500 along with 50 outpatient treatment centres across India. Currently, the healthcare provider has 120 beds spread over Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai, and Hubli.
