Key program components
While many existing public sector or social enterprise approaches address awareness, affordability and access to eye care, few concepts combine access, affordability and aesthetics. NGO and Public programmes provide free or very cheap eye care and spectacles for the poorest of the poor whereas mainstream optometrists sell spectacles targeted mainly to the upper and middle class.
A social franchise model allows the Institute to fulfil its mission of “Vision for everyone … everywhere”. Vision Centre projects will continue to target the poorest of the poor but focus on rural areas. The franchise chain will focus on urban or peri-urban areas targeting the Working Poor. This is a comprehensive strategy to reach underserved people.
The franchise stores provide a wide range of affordable eye care products and services with verified quality: Spectacles, Contact Lenses, Eye Care Accessories, eye examinations, preparation and repair of spectacles. Additionally the stores act as a trusted advisor to customers and give training on contact lenses about the effective product usage.
