Summary
CCBRT is the largest local provider of disability and rehabilitation services in Tanzania, specialising in eye, ortho, rehabilitation, prosthetics & orthotics, reconstructive surgery & fistula. Also engaged in maternal and newborn health, CCBRT is building its own Maternity Hospital.Program goals
CCBRT aims to empower people with disabilities and their families, improve their quality of life, and ensure access to medical and rehabilitative treatment. Committed to preventing disabilities wherever possible, CCBRT is also engaged in extensive maternal and newborn healthcare (MNHC) activities.
Key program components
Through a private-public partnership with the government of Tanzania, CCBRT opened the 200-bed CCBRT Disability Hospital. The hospital provides free surgical procedures and treatment for obstetric fistula and cleft lip/ palate patients, as well as free care for all patients under the age of five through heavily subsidizing other treatments.
CCBRT sees patients who are able to pay more using the same doctors and high quality care, offering them the convenience of appointments and fast track service. This income stream generates revenue that subsidizes the treatment of poorer patients.
To remove the barrier of paying for transport, CCBRT is using mobile money to cover transport to the hospital. Using Vodafone M-PESA, a mobile money transfer system, CCBRT sends the cost of transport to patients, allowing them to pay travel expenses through airtime. In 2013, 72% of obstetric fistula patients and 66% of cleft lip/palate patients were referred to CCBRT via M-PESA.
In preparation for the 2018 opening of the CCBRT Maternity & Newborn Hospital, CCBRT has partnered with the Government of Tanzania to provide on the job capacity building training in 23 private clinics throughout Dar es Salaam. Doctors, nurses, midwives, and data officers work side by side with public clinicians to improve patient care and ultimately reduce maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity.
