CHN is working to improve motivation and job satisfaction among frontline health workers in rural Ghana.
Key program components
The Community Health Nurse on the Go app aims to improve motivation among frontline health workers through a mobile technology application. By providing this mobile phone application to community health officers, nurses and their supervisors, CNH will combine virtual peer-to-peer support with improve connectedness to a professional network and supervisors for frontline health workers involved in maternal, newborn, and child health service delivery. The app offers health workers in remote areas opportunities for professional development and a reduced sense of social isolation, leading to higher job satisfaction and better quality care for MNCH clients.
Innovations engaged targeted end users, community health nurses and their supervisors, while developing this application. Through using a process using human-centered design techniques and incorporating feedback about their needs, wants and limitations. Participants identified components of the app that would provide professional development support and connectedness with their social networks, allowing Innovations to better tailor program designs to the target population, build community ownership, and increase community capacity to continue activities once initial program investment has ceased.
The app offers features to support the distinct roles and responsibilities of frontline health workers, such as:
- A point of care center with decision support tools for patient diagnosis and care
- A learning center with distance learning courses and training materials to help nurses develop and advance their skills
- An achievement center with tools enabling long distance supervision and performance monitoring linked to actual rewards offered by the health district
- An interactive hangout center to facilitate conversation, collaboration and resource sharing among health workers.
