Summary
The project builds partnerships with People Living with HIV/AIDS, Village Health Teams (VHTs), government health units, and other organizations to carry out awareness campaigns, and offer counseling and testing services to couples while identifying and giving referrals for early infant diagnosis .Program goals
The objective of the project is to improve of child survival through increased uptake of Prevention of mother to child HIV transmission (PMTCT) services and providing care & support to infected parents and their families using community based and family centered strategies.
Key program components
The project offers HIV Counseling and Testing of couples in communities and in relation to this, appropriate counseling and support is provided to women living with HIV to enable them make informed decisions about their reproductive lives and avoid unwanted pregnancies. The project builds the capacity of Resident Parish Mobilizers (RPMs) and Community PMTCT Officers (CPOs) through training workshops, who then carry out home visits to do counseling, referrals, follow-ups, distribute appropriate Information Education and Communication(IEC) materials and any other family planning commodities. Community awareness campaigns are carried out using community drama, weekly radio shows, sporting events and film shows among others.
In July 2008, ICOBI received a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to implement a Community PMTCT program in Uganda with special focus on Ankole region to increase the number of people that can be reached by PMTCT programmes.
