Summary
Contraceptive use among women in Egypt has risen approximately 32 percent over the past three decades. In response to the positive transition toward family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention, DKT launched its Egypt program to augment the amount of contraceptive use in the country.Key program components
DKT Egypt's team consists of 15 medical representatives and a national distributor who covers the entire country. Medical representatives pay visits to physicians to gain understanding about patient attitudes toward and knowledge of family planning. DKT-Egypt then tailors its educational outreach and advertising campaign to reach more Egyptians, especially women.
DKT Egypt works with the private sector in Egypt to provide low cost, high quality contraceptives to the population. In 2014, DKT Egypt sold 2.4 million condoms, and over 170 thousand emergency contraception pills. DKT Egypt has a unique method of providing family planning services in Egypt. It mainly depends on a network of 4,000 doctors and 8,000 pharmacies. DKT Egypt's team promotes products through door-to-door sales to clinics, pharmacies and hospitals. DKT is currently the main IUD provider in the private sector, selling over 387,000 IUDs in 2014. Starting in 2012, the variety of products offered by DKT Egypt expanded to 6 types of IUDs, 9 condom variants, emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), foaming spermicidal suppositories and misoprostol tablets.
Recently, DKT Egypt conducted a training session for health professionals at a rural hospital on IUD insertion and removal. DKT also partnered with CARE International to sponsor a training module on Sexually Transmitted Infections to physicians and nurses. These workshops allowed DKT to demonstrate all of its products such as DKT's Fiesta condoms, along with three-month injectables and IUD brands.
DKT Egypt participates in Obstetrics/Gynecology conferences and conducts client awareness seminars on family planning and reproductive health, which broaden the number of potential users for family planning methods. DKT Egypt uses both above-the-line (radio and magazine ads) and below-the-line (Arabic fliers) promotional tools to spread awareness about emergency contraception and ECPs throughout Egypt. To ensure availability of condoms, DKT Egypt recently started an e-marketing campaign to promote and sell condoms online, facilitating delivery to any address.
