Summary
DKT Ethiopia is the leading provider of condoms and contraceptives in Ethiopia, supplying 75% of the condoms and 40% of the oral contraceptives in Ethiopia from 2005 – 2010.Program goals
DKT Ethiopia aims to reach rural areas, providing condoms, oral contraceptives, and other birth control methods to small shops and pharmacies.
Key program components
DKT Ethiopia leverages the efficiencies of commercial distribution to improve access to condoms (male and female), oral contraceptive pills, emergency contraceptive pills, injectable contraception (Depo provera), IUDs, medical abortion pills, MVA Kits, and other reproductive health products as well as Misoprostol and ORS throughout Ethiopia at subsidized prices.
Within each product category, DKT Ethiopia distributes one or more brands. For example, in the case of condoms, DKT Ethiopia distributes Hiwot Trust, Sensation, and Members Only condoms. Each brand has at least one product variant and is priced incrementally to attract unique market segments. DKT Ethiopia promotes its brands extensively; the program's brand names are among the most recognized in Ethiopia. In 2014, DKT Ethiopia sold nearly 58 million condoms, 4.0 million cycles of oral contraceptives, and 2.9 million injectable contraceptives. In addition, DKT sold over 387,000 IUDs and over 311,000 medical abortion pills. This translates to 2,906,525 Couple Years of Protection.
DKT Ethiopia maintains offices and warehouses in all regions of Ethiopia. The organization also has a fleet of distribution vehicles and a highly dedicated sales and support staff. Furthermore, DKT is a close partner with the Ethiopian government and military, which have supported DKT's program with resources, broadcast airtime, commodities, and educational outreach. This support is a major reason why DKT Ethiopia has received funds from the Netherlands, England, Ireland, the World Health Organization, the Gates Foundation, and other sources.
In addition to its core activity of product distribution and promotion, DKT Ethiopia is a pioneer in HIV-prevention and contraceptive programming in Ethiopia and Africa. DKT Ethiopia's Wise-Up Program (Wise-Up) is one of the largest programs in Africa working to increase condom use among sex workers and other high-risk groups. DKT's documentary film, The HIV Superhighway, is a cutting-edge documentary explaining the link between multiple concurrent partnerships and the HIV-epidemic in east and southern Africa.
