At 200 per 100,000 live births, the maternal mortality rate is higher than in a number of other countries in the region, and there is widespread belief that this number is actually higher. More than two-thirds of Myanmar’s population lives in rural communities, and 87 percent of these maternal deaths occur in rural areas.
