Summary
Impact Norway built a “fistula-surgery” wing at a local hospital to combat address permanent fistula damage in mothers and young girls.Program goals
Help young girls move on to decent family life after developing fistulas as a result of labor.
Key program components
A fistula surgical wing was constructed at a local hospital in Arusha, Tanzania to provide care to women after giving birth. Rough labour, often without any medical assistance, resulted in permanent fistula damage in women and young girls in the area. Without surgical intervention, mothers remain crippled, resulting in the ostracization of both the mother and child from family and friends. The surgical wing provides access to the specialized surgery and follow-up care.
