Summary
Global Emergency Care Collaborative is a registered non-profit organization that provides comprehensive training programs in emergency care to local community members in limited-resource, rural areas. GECC currently works in rural Uganda, Kenya, and Cambodia.Program goals
Prior to implementing GECC’s work, eight out of ten people from the patient population died due to diseases such as severe malaria, pneumonia, and trauma. Since GECC’s inception in 2007, Nyakibale Emergency Department Care Practitioners have cared for 25,000 patients and project that they will continue to aid 7,000 each year.
Key program components
GECC provides a comprehensive 2-year Emergency Care Curriculum for local staff to effectively and independently serve patients in rural settings. GECC volunteers undergo a “train the trainer model” that ensures educational, clinical, and administrative knowledge to transfer in a timely manner.
GECC’s also administers a Pre-Hospital Education Project that provides educational outreach to underprivileged, rural community members. The project brings attention to various illnesses as well as the health services available to them. PER uses the same train the trainer model to help disseminate crucial health information and services as a preventative measure.
GECC also partners with local, academic institutions to offer Post-Basic Diploma in Emergency Critical Care Medicine to healthcare providers and a Master’s Program in Emergency Care for physicians in medical school. These partnerships focuses on developing local experts in emergency care, faculty development and training, and eventually, sustainable programs using entirely local faculty and instructors.
GECC’s dedication to training local members in emergency care has led to innovative projects that increase the resilient capacity of disadvantaged communities that face challenging health deficits. Through GECC’s educational training programs, local members become local experts on emergency care and become expert trainers.
