Summary
Since 1976, the nongovernmental organization, INPPARES (Peruvian Institute of Responsible Fatherhood), has worked to improve the quality of life of the Peruvian people, especially those disadvantaged socially and economically, through an emphasis on sexual and reproductive health.Program goals
• To promote and defend the right of adults and young people of both sexes, to decide freely the number and spacing of their children and enjoy the highest possible level of sexual and reproductive health
• Contribute to public health through maternal and child health programs, prevention of abortion and prevention of domestic violence.
• Promote the involvement of men in programs and comprehensive health services with emphasis on sexual and reproductive health.
Key program components
The Clínica del Hombre provides medical, psychological and educational specialists for men of all ages and is the first initiative of its kind in Peru. While many services are geared towards the patient's physical health, the educational program addresses ideas and assumptions about masculinity and the role of men as partners.
The Clínica del Hombre currently has 15 health professionals: 9 doctors and 6 psychologists who offer medical services for men of all ages. On average, the clinic serves over 500 patients per month. Strategic alliances with other clinics, local businesses, universities and interest groups are instrumental to maintaining a steady patient flow. Often, patients arrive at the clinic through referral from nearby regional clinics.
Workshops with local groups, such as gay advocacy groups, share information about services, promotions and offer education on sexual and reproductive health. Promotions have included discounts for women accessing INPPARES clinical services who bring their partner to the Clínica del Hombre. Other promotions target specific communities; for instance, discounts for groups, such as Taxistas, that host informational meetings or workshops.
MACHO, a complimentary project at INPARRES, targets mostly male teenagers and young people, through the implementation of innovative strategies that increase demand for reproductive health services, through workshops, networking and advertising at Universities and other public spaces; and offer differentiated services for adolescents and young men that address the needs of their age and gender.
Eager to utilize technology, the clinic offers virtual consultations through email and virtual chat lines. The clinic taps into social networks like facebook, flickr, twitter, blogger, and an informational video that can be seen at youtube to build its network. Social networking has been especially effective for organizing activities and social events. Radio ads and flyers are also used to share important information about workshops and promotions.
In 1999, with external investment, INPPARES established the Clínica del Hombre (Men’s Clinic) in Lima to respond to gaps in sexual and reproductive health services for men and to increase male involvement in family reproductive health. Over the years, INPARRES has made the Clínica del Hombre fiscally independent, by using affordable competitive pricing and setting high standards. Through the combination of medical and psychological health services, the Clínica del Hombre offers a unique set of services to the people of Lima and demand continues to grow. Currently, no plans exist to replicate the model.
