Summary
Jamii Smart (meaning “smart families”) aims to convert the huge success of M-Pesa, Safaricom’s mobile wallet solution, into an effective mHealth solution that significantly improves MCH by modeling on existing, sustainable mobile technologies from end users. The national scale mHealth initiative offProgram goals
To enable mHealth initiatives for maternal, newborn, and child health to achieve national scale in Kenya.
Key program components
Jamii smart uses a combination of web portals and SMS to deliver clinical components for mothers and children under 5 case management and link it to a community health M&E system. The system works in real time in connected areas and works offline in areas with no connectivity, synchronizing when a connection is made to a mobile network. Mobile wallet facilities allow for mSavings and eVouchers for mothers to manage their delivery and healthcare costs.
Jamii Smart is being implemented in two phases:
1. A clinical phase that seeks to enable use of information technology at health facility level. The mother/ child booklet formerly called MCH clinic card has been automated to ensure real time data is relayed into the system and also provides a logarithm of expected services for various categories of MCH clients
2. A phase based at the community level that have community health workers relay data from the household/ community level and provide messaging for mothers.
