Our goals are to combat maternal mortality and allow women and couples to have children by choice, not chance. With hundreds of skilled medical professionals working for us across the country we are getting closer and closer to achieving these goals!
Key program components
Maries Stopes International Yemen delivers information, services and care to our clients through 15 centres, 180 midwives, 2 outreach teams, a toll-free helpline and social marketing activities through our local affiliate the Yamaan Foundation for Health and Social Development.
Our 15 centres, 180 midwives and 2 outreach teams offer a full range of high quality family planning and reproductive health services to women designed to meet their immediate and future needs. Women are able to exercise their reproductive rights, determine the number, spacing and timing of their children and receive healthcare for themselves and their newborn babies.
Given that 75% of Yemen’s population is under the age of 30, we place a significant focus on providing reliable and factual information about contraception and sex to youth through our toll-free helpline called Shababline, or Youthline in English. The phone line allows young Yemenis to speak to trained counselors and doctors about any sexual and reproductive health concerns or questions they may have. Since its beginning in 2011, the phoneline’s calls have increased from 350 per month to more than 3,000.
The innovative social marketing programme of Yamaan Foundation, our local affiliate, acts as a bridge between our services, the public sector and the private sector, by training pharmacists, healthcare professionals and religious and community leaders, of the importance of family planning for the health and wellbeing of women, children, families and communities. Distribution of our Protec family planning methods to private service providers also compliments these activities and allows women and couples to access safe, reputable and affordable contraception throughout the country.
