Summary
Omilling HIV-AIDS Project promotes HIV-AIDS awareness and testing in remote settlements in the Omilling countryside, an area facing one of the highest concentrations of HIV-AIDS infection in Sudan.Program goals
During Sudan's civil war, many women were gang-raped and consequently became infected with HIV/AIDS. Later when thousands of refugees fled to Omilling after peace agreements, they brought HIV/AIDS with them. The Omilling HIV/AIDS project aims to train 300 women to give HIV/AIDS talks, promoting awareness and testing. The project's long-term impact is to reduce the annual toll of new HIV infections by enabling individuals to protect themselves and others.
Key program components
The initiative provides villagers with up-to-date information on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and testing. Women are trained to give HIV/AIDS talks in remote settlements and are also linked with outside experts that can test for HIV infection. Furthermore, support groups are offered to HIV positive women to help them cope with the emotional aftermath of rape and the social stigma attached to HIV/AIDS. The activities will be linked to HOPE Ofiriha’s existing health projects, such as the use of volunteers to encourage HIV testing at health posts. Components of this approach include: - Two HIV awareness and education officers trained by HOPE Ofiriha. The officers are provided with one motorbike so they can work closely with Omilling’s rural areas. - Local chiefs and senior members of society will be educated so that they can pass on the key messages. - Methods to spread this information include awareness materials (guideline documents, posters, fliers etc.), presentations at schools, meetings with communities, workshops with local chiefs, etc. The awareness program concentrates on Omilling villages in the northern part of Magwi town, which have particularly high level of HIV-AIDS. The Hope Ofiriha officers work with the authorities from the Health Department to ensure effective communication to these isolated communities.
