Summary
Hope Service is a clinical care service at Sihanouk Hospital Center of Hope to address health problems for people in Cambodia that are largely underserved.Program goals
The initiation of Hope Services aims at increasing availability and accessibility of health care services, particularly for treatment of chronic and/or critical illnesses that are expensive and sometimes unaffordable for the poor.
Key program components
The process of screening patients for care services is prioritized primarily based on the conditions and characteristics of their health problems, irregardless of their socio-economic status. Over time more patients, mainly those with critical conditions and/or chronic health problems, began visiting the health facility. As a result, the hospital was unable to serve the clients they had hoped to target.
By 2009, HOPE Worldwide established another six branch facilities specifically designed for those who can afford the service fees. The revenue generated from service fees is used to support the main facility that offers free-of-charge services for the under-served people.
Not only does HOPE Worldwide primarily focus on increasing access to quality care services but it also emphasizes sustainability through building up the capacity of local staff who manage the service provision. At the beginning, many international experts and specialists provided on-site job training for Cambodian staff. As the capacity of Cambodian staff grew, international experts and specialists handed over technical responsibilities to Cambodian staff.
Besides delivering clinical care services, SHCH and its branches serve as places for local and international on-job training, and technical proficiency exchanges. To establish more accurate diagnosis and information flow, HOPE Worldwide has started to equip the facilities with sophisticated equipments such as scanners and software for managing patient's information and internal and external information sharing. HOPE Worldwide through its medical teams also regularly organizes free-of-charge mobile clinics to reach more people living around the Phnom Penh.
