Summary
Sure girl initiative is a cervical cancer awareness program, which targets reduction of cervical cancer mortality in Nigeria through awareness campaigns, vaccination of young girls before they become sexually active and provision of affordable mobile screening and vaccination to women above 21..Program goals
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women globally(WHO, 2015). Every two minutes a woman dies of cervical cancer. Over 85% percent of these deaths occur in developing countries such as Nigeria. With the HIV/AIDs pandemic, the peak age incidence of cervical cancer has dropped. The Other parts of the world such as Europe and USA have literally overcome the disease by a well-structured awareness, screening treatment and vaccination program. The level of awareness of the disease in Nigeria is very low and there is no well structured screening and vaccination services in the country. The aim of our program is to create a grass root awareness for this disease and offer affordable, mobile screening and vaccination services.
Key program components
The Sure girl initiative programs covers cervical cancer awareness to the populace( schools, churches, organisations, etc) both in rural and urban areas starting with Anambra state and also offer mobile vaccination services at the lowest public sector price(7500 naira) to girls aged 9-13 years before they become sexually active according to WHO. We intend to extend our services to screening and vaccination of eligible women aged 21-55 years at a subsidized rate and provision of other post screening care.
